it. playinator browsing is one of Firefox's best features, but after you've opened a dozen tabs or so, it's easy to lose track of them all. That's where playinator comes in. Simply press F2 or Alt tilde, and this clever Firefox extension displays thumbnail images of your tabs. From there, you can jump to a given tab by clicking its thumbnail or selecting it with the keyboard. playinator also provides a search bar that allows you to quickly filter tabs with keywords. Additional options let you set thumbnail dimensions and the maximum number of thumbnails. The images pop up instantly on a modern PC. For casual users, playinator may be little more than eye candy, but for hard-core surfers who keep 15 or 20 tabs going at once, it's a great way to save time. This freeware application blocks any access to your PC through password-protected locking, but it isn't as secure as we'd expect. To begin, you'll need to have Macromedia Flash Player installed on your machine to run this program. In actuality, playinator doesn't lock your PC as its name suggests; instead, its program's window display blocks your computer screen. A quick Ctrl Alt Delete will easily terminate this program's chief function. Each time it is launched, playinator requires you to enter a password to enable and disable it. If an incorrect password is keyed in, access is denied and the blocked attempt is noted once the correct password is entered. All said, we don't recommend playinator for protecting your computer from curious eyes since it is so easily disabled. This application promises to instantly capture thumbnails from a Web site, but suffers from an unappealing design and spotty performance. playinator's plain interface doesn't appear complicated. You're instructed to enter the address for the images and hit Go. There are only two more buttons offered: one to choose all returned images and one to download files. No Help file is offered to outline the program's capabilities or limitations, though the publisher's brief description mentions two image hosting sites it's supposed to be compatible with. In our tests, however, it didn't always identify images from these sites and it didn't work at all on general sites that contain thumbnails. The only choices found on the Options menu are to manage duplicate images. Despite being offered as freeware, this faulty app offers few, if any, benefits, and users should look elsewhere for a more effective way to quickly download images. Managing extensive media collections is a bit easier with Ruby, but disabled features and uninspired functionality keep the program from being a true gem. After a relatively speedy scan of the discs in your music and movie library, you will be able to explore and search them anytime without inserting them. On the plus side, Ruby can view archives as well as generate CD covers based on disc contents, though you can't access the latter feature until you register. Descriptions only can be automatically generated for MP3 files, however. The interface could be more straightforward and attractive, though you can at least change the overall color scheme. We were disappointed to find so many advanced features disabled in this download. Ruby will probably be most useful for collections weighted toward MP3s. This small freeware utility measures the latency of an Internet connection, but expects users to understand the results. playinator does not require installation, and the executable opens a small DOS window. To run the program, you have to accept the license agreement, which can be executed with an accept parameter. Executing playinator
